i took the above photo when i was travelling around the south island and hiked to the top of a place called ‘rob roy glacier’ because someone told me that keas lived up there. the hike was partic hard because it was all uphill and i was a bit ill but it all felt worth it when we got to the top and there were nice waterfalls and 3 keas were just roaming around trying to get food from people. they came up really close to me i nearly peed myself. keas are one of the most intelligent birds in the world!!!!! they can only be found in the south island of nz, mostly in the mountains or by coastal forests. think they are real lil shits because they like stealing people’s stuff and take apart parts of cars etc. v v beautiful bird imo

a takahe is a flightless bird that lives in new zealand. there are less than 225 of them left but i saw two of them (above) when i went to a bird sanctuary in wellington. they are just real cool, and v docile (which doesn’t help their rate of decline). a lot of birds in nz evolved to be flightless because there were no large land mammals to threaten them until the European settlers came in 1800s. what a bunch of dicks tbh. more bird stuff later.

i loved the frick out of this book tbh, here are some things

“”the religious intimacy, the gravity” of the lover’s world”

- chapter entitled ‘the absent one’: “a word comes from the body which expresses the emotion of absence: to sigh: “to sigh for the bodily presence”“

- “every contact raises the question of an answer: the skin is asked to reply”

- “he realises he is doomed to wander until he dies, from love to love”

- in “ghost ship” he talks about how although each love is unique, you can’t help but feel like things are repeating themselves. the ghost ship refers to what the lover becomes when he is no longer the lover, passes into a different realm (friendship) or disappears completely

- re: a relaish “i am its poet only for the beginning; the end, like my own death, belongs to others”

- “as if, by love, i acceded to another logic”

- this wandering from love to love is, despite logic & past experiences, the belief that love will “someday be fulfilled”

- describes doing cuddles with someone as being “in the realm of sleep, without sleeping”

- lots of references to the women as the mother, duh

- “amorous passion is a delirium; but such delirium is not alien, everyone speaks of it…what is enigmatic is the loss of delirium: one returns to…what?”

- when we think back to past loves it is not to learn anything from it, not to wax philosophical, but to feel some emotion, which is not, regardless of what the book suggests, entirely useless

-“we return to the root of all relations, where need and desire join”

- “everything is calm, and that is worse” - breakin up, nah mean, relates to this later in paragraph: “i am doing harm to the one i love, involuntarily, of course, but without panic”

- “i see myself in the other who loves without being loved, i recognise in him the very gestures of my own unhappiness, but this time it is i myself who am the active agent of this unhappiness” - it is a strange feeling not to be in love with someone who loves you, you experience everything from a large distance, there is something in your body which betrays you, because it is not through wanting. you view the situation from another body
